My special project, originally completed in <a title=\"\" href=\"59a8123f7d2d6bd4d4abeec9ffa8a3fd.php\">ILS 503</a>, was to research, design, guide, and implement a beginning reader book leveling program at the <a title=\"\" href=\"http://www.cantonpubliclibrary.org\">Canton Public Library</a> in Canton, Connecticut. The library collection and program for beginning readers is known as <em>I Can Read</em>.*&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The I Can Read Program has allowed Children\'s Librarian, Heather Baker, to fill holes in the beginning reader collection over the past year and a half. The capstone experience is the culminating academic event for students enrolled in a master’s degree graduate program. It requires students to demonstrate their ability to organize and synthesize knowledge and apply skills developed throughout their academic program.</em><br />\n<br />About me:<br />\n<br />My first experience working in a library was in the summer of 1990 as a temporary cataloging typist with the Canton Public Library in Canton, Connecticut. Subsequently, I went on to earn my B.A. in English Literature from the University of Connecticut (UConn 1996). During my tenure at UConn, I worked as the assistant to the Director of Special Collections at the Homer Babbidge Library. I have also volunteered as a children\'s library aid at the Aldrich Library in Barre, Vermont, and have completed special projects for the children\'s library and oversized book collections at the Canton Public Library more recently. I am currently employed as a substitute reference librarian and circulation librarian at the Canton Public Library.<br />\n<br />My career experience includes over ten years of experience as a software analyst and quality assurance specialist in the insurance and medical industries. Unlike some, however, I am also enamored of technology. I believe the marriage of tradition and progress can take libraries and information to heights not dreamed of since the invention of the printing press. I am a romantic and a dreamer, yes. I am also a pragmatist.\n\n\nWe are not going to stop the vast flow of information in our modern world. Arguments about the evils of Google and Wikipedia will largely fall on deaf ears of a public who does not, as yet, even understand that librarians do more than &quot;stamp books&quot; at a circulation desk. What we are capable of doing, however, is injecting our knowledge and expertise into this relatively brave new world of technology and the internet.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Coming into the Information and Library Science program at Southern Connecticut State University, having spent over ten years in information technology and software development, I took for granted that my classmates would have the same views I have expressed. I took for granted that progress was a good thing. That information technology and information were comfortable partners. What I have learned over the last year and a half, however, is that I was wrong.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Many of my classmates expressed, time and again, a deep seated discomfort with the pace of the information highway, the Wild West atmosphere, and the irreverence the public seems to display for old fashioned libraries. They were often more comfortable with the idea of censorship of electronic information than of printed information. They were also dubious about the likelihood of the success of ebooks and downright frustrated with what they saw as the barriers to disseminating information from electronic journals and other non-print sources. Many good debates took place surrounding these issues, and I learned a great deal from my classmates\' reservations about the perils libraries face in the information age.</p>\n<p>Coming to the end of this program, I can say that I still hold the starry eyed hope and excitement for information technology and its potential to re-invigorate the public view of librarianship and libraries. I would not want to live in a world where either books or technology did not exist. I do believe the two can coexist beautifully. We are simply at a stage where we are working out the bumps in the road, so to speak. We\'ve had over 500 years to perfect the printing press. Given that long, I am confident we can come up with solutions to the problems which my classmates and professors have brought to my attention.
